Who Needs to Pay Advance Tax?
- Any person whose estimated tax liability exceeds Rs. 10,000 in a financial year
- Salaried individuals with significant income beyond salary (capital gains, freelancing, rental income, FD interest)
- Self-employed professionals and business owners
- Senior citizens (60+) without business income are exempt from advance tax
Penalty for Late/Non-Payment
- Section 234B: Interest at 1% per month on tax due if advance tax paid is less than 90% of assessed tax
- Section 234C: Interest at 1% per month for deferment of individual installments
- Interest is calculated on a simple interest basis
How to Calculate Advance Tax
- Estimate your total income for the year from all sources
- Calculate tax liability using applicable slab rates
- Subtract TDS already deducted by employer/banks
- If remaining tax > Rs. 10,000, pay advance tax in quarterly installments
How to Pay Advance Tax Online
- Visit eportal.incometax.gov.in > e-Pay Tax
- Enter PAN, select Assessment Year, and choose "Advance Tax (100)"
- Enter the amount and pay via net banking, debit card, or UPI
- Save the challan receipt for your records
